This page explains the cookies and similar technologies Tartare.org uses, who sets them, what they do, and how to opt out. It complements our privacy policy.
What is a cookie
A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. Some cookies are set by the site you're visiting ("first-party"), and others by services embedded in the site such as advertising or analytics ("third-party"). "Similar technologies" includes things like local storage, pixels, and device identifiers that work in comparable ways.
Categories of cookies on this site
Strictly necessary
Used to load the site, remember basic preferences during your visit, and protect against abuse. These do not require consent under most regimes.
Analytics
Help us understand which pages get read and which fall flat, so we can improve the site. We rely on Google Analytics 4 for this.
Advertising
Tartare.org is supported by ads served by Google AdSense and its partners. Advertising cookies are used to:
- Decide which ads to show.
- Measure how often ads are seen and clicked.
- Where you have not opted out, personalise ads based on your prior visits to this and other sites.
The main cookies you may see
| Name (or family) | Set by | Purpose | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga, _ga_* |
Google Analytics | Distinguish unique visitors and sessions in aggregate. | Analytics |
NID, __Secure-*, IDE, ANID, DSID |
Google / DoubleClick (AdSense) | Serve and measure advertising; ad personalisation when permitted. | Advertising |
| Various third-party identifiers | Ad partners participating in Google's auction | Frequency capping, measurement, fraud prevention. | Advertising |
Specific cookie names and lifetimes are controlled by Google and its partners and may change. The list above is illustrative rather than exhaustive.
How to control or opt out
- Personalised ads (Google): turn off via Google Ad Settings. You will still see ads, just non-personalised ones on this site.
- Industry-wide ad opt-outs: aboutads.info (US Digital Advertising Alliance) and YourOnlineChoices (EDAA, Europe).
- Google Analytics: install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
- Browser-level controls: all major browsers let you block, limit, or clear cookies. See your browser's documentation. Note that blocking cookies may affect site functionality.
- Mobile devices: "Limit Ad Tracking" on iOS and the equivalent advertising-ID controls on Android both reduce personalisation.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
"Do Not Track" is no longer a meaningful signal in most browsers and we do not respond to it. Where applicable law treats Global Privacy Control (GPC) as a valid opt-out signal — in particular for California residents under the CCPA/CPRA — we treat GPC as a request to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information.
Third parties
Cookies set by Google or by other ad partners are subject to those parties' own policies:
